Analysis of Sound - Adulthood
It begins with silence and a slide show of pictures, the fact that there's no sound will draw the audience in.
As were watching the scene we see a punch being thrown, the impact of the punch is assisted by diagetic sound, as we hear the ruffling of the clothes and the sound of the feet being dragged along the floor this suggests that the film is violent and the genre is crime. This is also parallel sound as the music relates to the scenes that we are seeing at the the time.
Diagetic sound is again used when we hear the sound of cars passing and at the same time the scene ends which tells the audience that time has also past.
Non diagetic sound then is faded in, the background music begins loud and gets louder, the music sounds very young and something that would be played at a teenagers party this tells the audience that this is a film revolved around teenagers, this is also parallel sound , as the music is playing we see images of a party scene the song being played is in an urban genre and in the scene we see things that would be seen as stereotypical for urban listeners and young people such as smoking this tells us that the audience the film is trying to draw in are young teenagers.
The music continues to play in the background but starts to quieten down as we start to hear the footsteps of the people dancing and characters begin to talk.
The music eventually goes and we focus on the characters but there is still music in the background from the party in the scene so all the sound we can hear is dagetic.
At the end of the scene we hear police sirens that may have been added in to show again show the genre of the film and show the characters personalties.
